We have begun the clinical evaluation studies for our new GenomEra Norovirus assay in three Finnish hospital laboratories. The assay is a direct RT-PCR test for stool samples with less than 2 minutes hands-on-time including only simple sample dilution and heating steps. The assay simultaneously detects and differentiates norovirus genogroups GI and GII with a turnaround time of around one hour. The assay will be available soon for diagnostic use (CE-IVD).
Human noroviruses, RNA viruses of the family Caliciviridae, are the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide and cause substantial levels of morbidity and mortality. Symptoms usually include acute onset of vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. Noroviruses are also considered to be the most common viral agents of epidemic food-borne and water-borne viral gastroenteritis.
